November Resolutions Recap

Today is resolution recap day.

While I will follow up on my resolutions, I also wanted to show off my Christmas tree!  It is our first Christmas Tree as a couple and the first Christmas tree our two youngest cats have experienced.  Ezekiel (the two year old) seemed thrilled to have a piece of the outdoors in our living room.  They have not destroyed it yet, but I don't think they can knock it over, because it's in a planter.  In the spring, we are going to plant it outside.  I'm excited we get to keep our first Christmas tree forever.

My sister gave me this ornament.

The ornaments I bought from a certain retailer did not include hooks.

Ezekiel standing guard of the tree.

I'll be sewing each of the four cat's names into the stockings.  Boy, will they be surprised Christmas morning!  Since they can't read, I can tell you they will be getting catnip and mice for Christmas.

Alright, back to resolutions recap.

My Spiritual Resolution was to focus on the Fruit of the Spirit Peace.  My two verses were John 14:27 and Romans 12:18.  They are two of my favorite verses on the subject and one is a song from my childhood, so it's easier to memorize.  If everyone made it a point to practice the fruits of the spirit, the world would be an easier place to live.

My Mental Resolution was to read more fiction.  This past week I learned a benefit of reading fiction before bed.  It gives your brain a chance to relax and give up problem solving in order to fall asleep faster.

My Emotional Resolutions were to write letters and learn how to make bottle cap magnets. While I did learn how to make the magnets, I did not actually engage in making them.  My creative juices were not flowing.  Soon though, my sister is coming over for a Christmas party and I have decided we will be making Christmas presents for friends and family.

My Physical Resolution for the month was to MOVE.  Just Dance 3 helped me to do just that.  Wednesday I earned 5 stars on a song and it pretty much made my night. ;)  It is fun and involves one of my favorite things, music.  They even post the lyrics so you can sing along, but it is hard to dance and sing.  Now we know why there is lip-syncing.  The other part of my physical resolution was to consider being gluten free.  I did donate the pasta. As far as being gluten free, I like to call it being gluten less.  I'm not obsessing over it, but I am excited to try some gluten free products as replacements for wheat products.

My extra resolution was to take more photos of little Riley.  She is a cutie.  I'm very blessed to have her in my life.  She is always moving, so the picture came out a little blurry.

Thank you to Kelli from She Learns As She Goes for coming up with the idea of Monthly Resolutions and for sharing her journey through life with us in such a graceful public manner.  I'm glad you are feeling better, Kelli.  We missed you.  Visit her blog and show her some love.

Christmas is Coming!

What I am Currently:

Watching:  Crossing Jordan on Netflix.  It's about a medical examiner's office.  Describing it to a friend, I mentioned it's a mixture of Law and Order and Grey's Anatomy.  I never really watched the show when it was on TV, because it was on the same time as another of my favorite shows (can't remember which), but I would switch to Crossing Jordan when the commercials came on or a rerun was playing.  Some of the plots are a little too easy for me to guess the results, but I like the characters.

Wishing:  I could remember the poems I write in my dreams.  I can't even remember the themes.  The process of waking up distracts my brain.  All I can think is, man that was a great piece of work, too bad I can't remember.

Waiting:  For my address labels to arrive in the mail.

Wondering:  When my business will take off and running.  It's all on my shoulders to plow ahead.  It's my responsibility.  It's time I took that to heart and started acting.  My business cards came in the mail and I've been passing them out to friends and family.  Tomorrow is my day to letter write.  At least one must be finished tomorrow.

Worrying:  Too many worries to count and name.

A Day of Thanks

Yes, I did fall off the face of the earth for a little while.  It feels like forever since I've written a blog post, even though the last one dated was only a week ago.

Today is Thanksgiving and of course, everyone is getting into the spirit of the holiday and expressing their thanks and gratitude.  I am no exception to the rule.

Many people do not know the story of how Thanksgiving came to be a national holiday.  It did not happen until the year 1864 under President Lincoln.  To read more about the holiday's origins I recommend the following links:

Things for which I am grateful for this year:

Family:  My family has influenced a lot of who I am and how I act.  Yes, I am a firm believer in nurture, though I acknowledge there is a balance in the whole nature vs nurture debate.

Friends:  Some friends are family.  You know who you are in my life. ;)

Pets:  Clorox, Wuss, Ezekiel, and Riley, the latest addition to the clan.

Jobs:  I am an employee at two jobs, when some people cannot find employment.

Music:  Music is such an inspiration to me.  I do not know where I would be in life without music.  Even though my voice is not perfect and my instrumental abilities are mediocre, music is an outlet, a form of expression.  Rhythm and rhyme are important to my life.

Crafts:  Arts and crafts are fun and a way to make gifts for people.  If only I could get better at mailing them...they literally sit in their packaging waiting for me to send.  Making something from scratch is way to show people they are important to me.

Food:  Another artistic expression!  Also, a life sustaining force.  Food is nourishment and fun.  All the food groups appeal to me, especially chocolate!

Technology:  Where would we be in life without computers?  Outside?  Using our brains more?  Physically moving?  Interacting with our neighbors?  Spending more time making healthy meals?  Interacting with our families?  Where would be in life without indoor plumbing?  That's a better question.  Where would we be without the wheel?  Where would we be without electricity?  Oh wait, we'd be sleeping more.

Days of Remembrance:  I, for one, I am thankful for days set aside for a purpose.  Today, I did not have to work at my retail jobs.  Today, I had a special dinner with my family.  While I understand some professions have to work, I do hope they can set aside another day for family and remembrance.

I am thankful for many more things, specific to my life and general to all mankind, but now it is time to rest after a day well spent.

You will see more blog posts from me in the future.

"Still" by Sak

Disappear into thin air
If only to appear in that future year

Where does our Lord  keep those souls?
Apart from us, we, them?
Their bodies lay here upon this earth still
Our eyes behold

but the spirit is ever still...

"Alone with My God" by Sak

Alone with my God
Sitting on the outside of the world looking in
He's been there through thick and thin
I'll stand by Him
If it's the only promise I keep

"Remember, remember the 5th of November."

Tomorrow is Election Tuesday, fraught with anticipation and dread for a lot of people.  A video from Blimey Cow kind of sums up how I feel at the moment.  Click here to be taken to said video.

What else am I currently up to at the moment?

Currently:

Loving little Riley.  She is a very cuddly kitten with a certain spunk in her.  She has guts and holds her own with the other three cats.  Her extra toes are adorable.

Looking forward to Thanksgiving.  It's hard to believe it is only a little over two weeks away.

Cooking more meat.  There is some sweet Italian sausage in the fridge.  Yum!

Catching up on some old time favorite songs.  Anyone remember CDs?  Or even better, cassettes?  Making mix tapes for my friends was one of my favorite things to do.  Music tells a story, creates a mood.

Missing being involved in music.  Back in my teenage years, I volunteered with a youth group band.  It was a lot of fun to be a part of something bigger than myself.

Philippians 4:6-8

"Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.  And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.  Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things." - Philippians 4:6-8

November Resolutions

My monthly resolutions for November:

Spiritual Resolution:  Focus on the Fruit of the Spirit Peace.

My verses for this month will be John 14:27 and Romans 12:18

"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." - John 14:27

"If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men." - Romans 12:18

Mental Resolution:

Read more books.  The past two months have been focused on reading books pertaining to my career.  This month I would like to read for pleasure.  My friend recommended Graceling by Kristin Cashore.  Already the books remind me of The Hunger Games. The main character in Graceling is called Katsa and one of the main male characters is named Po.  There is a secret underground society.  The story line and plot are very different from Hunger Games though.  I would much rather have seen a movie adaptation of this series. There is a short video on Youtube, which I will link here.

Emotional Resolution:

This month, I would like to continue to write letters to friends.  Also, I would like to learn how to make bottle cap magnets and sell them on Etsy.  My Etsy shop is almost ready to be open, but I'm extremely nervous about selling my art.  I NEED to follow through on this resolution, because Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat.

Physical Resolution:

MOVE

Yes, I need more movement in my life.  It has to be easy and fun.  Also, I would like to eat less carbs...and I'm considering strongly becoming gluten free.  The first thing is to find a food bank or pantry to donate all the extra pasta we have in our cupboard!  Since my voting place is a church, on Tuesday I will ask if they have somewhere to give food.

Extra Resolutions:

Take lots of photographs of Riley!

Conehead is not amused.

Thank you to Kelli from She Learns As She Goes for inspiring us with the idea of monthly resolutions.  A bunch of us link up through her blog each month.  Check out her blog, she is one talented lady.

October Resolutions Recap

October's Resolutions seemed simple enough for me to follow, but I must admit, I royally flopped at my goals this past month.  Thanks to Kelli Taylor from She Learns As She Goes for inspiring me with this wonderful idea of publicly writing out my goals for each month to keep accountable and share my experiences.

My Spiritual Goal for the month of October was to focus on the joy of the Lord.  The overall theme I have chosen for my Spiritual Resolutions are the Fruits of the Spirit mentioned in Galations 5:22, 23  My verse for the month was "...weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning." - Psalms 30:5b  How true it is...whenever my night is filled with grief, it is a joy to wake up to a new day, where I can begin again.

On a different note, has anyone heard Taylor Swift's new song, "Begin Again"?  It is a slow song, but I like the message the song portrays.  It's a contrast song, comparing a bad relationship with a new one.  Isn't that what a lot of us do, me included, when we first enter a new relationship?  It helps me to remember, insulting someone in order to compliment another is not a true compliment.

I dropped the ball when it came to my Mental Resolutions for the month of October.  I did read a chunk of the manual, but did not blog or tweet at all.  It makes me uncomfortable to advertise my services when I'm still looking for an affordable office space.  At this point, an office outside the home is not looking like a possibility.  While I do believe God can open doors (and windows), I still worry and become impatient when things don't immediately go my way.

My Emotional Resolution for the month was to snail mail letters and invite girls to the gym with me.  I did write one letter, but I ended up canceling my gym membership.  Saving money has become a priority.  I would like to step up the snail mail letters.  I bought a cool book at a local used bookstore (2 for a $1, I couldn't resist!) called Whatcha Mean What's a Zine?  The Art of Making Zines and Mini-Comics.  It is inspiring me to experiment with art and be more creative.

My Physical Resolutions were thrown out the window after the second time being sick in the month.  I do need to spend more time in physical activity.  Since my work now involves mainly staying in one spot all day, I have noticed myself getting a little out of shape. Exercise has never been my favorite thing in the world.  If only I could find a way to make it more fun.

Let's tally up the grades:

Spiritual Goal:  A

Mental Goal:  C

Emotional Goal:  B

Physical: F

Let's hope November can be a more productive month.
